THE CHALLANGE:

For a school project, I was tasked with designing a custom typeface inspired by a historical invention. I chose the radio and built a system around its silhouette to shape the letterforms. The typeface has structured forms designed with curves to nod to the radio’s classic shape.


I began by exploring how to make the alphabet consistent, and further developed it in RoboFont to nail down the 24 characters along with grammatical symbols and ligatures.

THE SOLUTION:

To properly refine the typeface, I put the font to the test with a type specimen book to check for inconsistencies to catch and make the necessary adjustments. As a final touch, I hand-stitched a Japanese-style bound zine to showcase how it was designed to be used.


The zine became part of the design process itself by refining leading, kerning, and letter spacing through iteration, and ultimately serving as the final, printed home for the typeface.
